Ice Cream Sandwich update for GSM Nexus S smartphones out now

Wonderful news for all T-Mobile Google Nexus S users out there: Android 4.0 for GSM/UMTS models of the smartphone.

Although Google tells us it might take a month before everyone receives it, there is also a manual way to update your handset. But please, if you own a CDMA model, do not do this!

What you have to do is: get the OTA software package and rename it “update.zip” and you copy it to the root of the internal storage of your Google Nexus S. Next power off your phone and then press volume up and the power button to reboot the device to the bootloader. With your volume keys select “recovery” and then press the power button. You will see a warning triangle with an arrow and which time you hold the power button and press on volume up. You will select “apply update from/sdcard” and choose update.zip. Next you select “reboot system now”.

Kids, you now have the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on your Google Nexus S handset!
