Google Maps and Nokia Maps show how congested are the roads

Google Maps and Nokia Maps have been improved in terms of traffic information. While unfortunately this information is not available yet in all countries, the functions worth mentioning are interesting for drivers and maybe in the future we will see available in all countries.

Google Maps traffic information already provided in the form of color on the map. A green road is free, and the red one is busy. From now on, traffic information available when you calculate a route, so you can know from the beginning not only if a road is busy or not, but it takes to reach the destination. It is a welcome development, because often times the estimated road navigation applications are only theoretical, the reality is different.

To provide this function, Google Maps use an service that provides traffic information, and automatically send to Maps users information using My Location. Traffic data are currently available only for US.

And Nokia Maps provides similar information. Features are in testing in India, but Nokia promises to expand to other countries. Like Google Maps, Nokia Maps uses location-based service users to determine how busy is a road section.

Shows how gradually replace mobile GPS devices. Their advantages are that the maps up to date, and Internet connectivity allows additional services, such as the traffic information.
